I, too, saw Dawn’s request for other topics, and asked
about what was going on with us. Thus I decided to
de-lurk (for lurking is just about all I have time to
do now, after school has started), and answer these
prompts, and give some current updates about myself.
There is some heavy stuff going on in my life right
now, but to help that seem less downtrodden and
whatnot, I will water it down with tongue-in-cheek
comments about “hell hath no fury like a woman
scorned”, and alterations to the male reproductive
system. And I apologize if even that is over the top.
Feel free to take out a mallet and snap me back into
be proper. My thinking has been rather crooked as of
late.
> 1. What book are you reading now? Why did you
> choose
> it? What is it about? Do you like it?
Right now I’m reading “Wicked”, by Greggory Maguire.
I chose it for 3 reasons. 1) I needed to pick out a
book to do lots of long and analytical essays for my
honors english class, 2) I love the “Wizard of Oz”
movies (yes movies as in plural), the book series, the
plays, and whatnot. 3) Wicked was made into a
musical. Anyway, it’s about the life and times of the
wicked witch of the west, how she got to be evil, what
the nature of evil is, and how mankind can control its
destiny or not. I, personally, think that it is a
fabulous book, if not rather vulgar. It’s horribly,
disgustingly vulgar, but it is that way for a reason,
not for shock value. It’s dark, full of symbolism and
character development, and it’s one of the best novels
to come out in a long time, but the author has also
made himself quite transparent in his political
leanings, which can be a bit disconcerting at times.
Also, while it raises great questions about humanity
and whatnot, it is not the same Oz that Baum wrote
about. Baum wrote about an Oz that was not supposed
to be a utopia, but a simpler world, where there was
less gray and black, but more white. It was sometimes
an evil place, but it had it’s good qualities, and the
people were largely ignorant of human failings and
tried to live in goodness. It was about human
nature– and about how human nature was learned, but
the difference is that the original Oz, Baum’s Oz–
was the work of an author who was an optimist, while
the completely different, dark, and ultimately failed
Oz in Wicked is the work of someone, who, I do
believe, is a pessimest. And, personally, being an
idealist, I recognize human nature and it’s failings,
but I refuse that human nature is all failure. We
have our good points, too, and they are our salvation
from our atrocities, there are good people and bad,
there is not just one terrible, doomed world, there is
a crooked world that keeps on spinning all the same.
Sheesh, my english teacher would be proud. Speaking
of her, she’s incredibly fantabulous. She shares my
same opinion on grades (more interested in learning
than a report card), she likes creative writing and
long class discussions, and she’s very interesting.
She says that her husband says that she “belongs in a
home for the easily amused”. She lets us drink tea in
class. She makes her own jewelry. We write quotes on
her white board. She keeps us very busy but we love
her still.
> 2. What albums or music have you bought or been
> listening to of late?
I simply adore music that is in different languages,
and I have fallen in love with middle eastern music as
of late. There’s this place called “mazika.com”,
where you can (LEGALLY!) download MP3s from
independent artists from places like Eygpt, Lebanon,
Jordan, etc. Awesome music. Of course, I am always
listening to Mozart, Bach, and Handel, besides the
usual goth (the cure, diva destruction, lacuna coil),
and Japanese stuff (Malice Mizer, Moi Dix Mois,
Baroque, Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki, etc). Also, in
Concert Choir, we’ve been singing Mozart’s “Ave
Verum”, in latin (some choirs choose to sing it in
english), so I’ve been listening to that all the time,
on my own.
> 3. Do you like your name? ie. First and Middle.
> Let’s avoid last names due to anonymity sake. What
> name would you have like to have been given.
I like my first name, Amy, pretty well, as it means
beloved in latin, and friend in french. My middle
name, Lynn, I hate. It’s too southern for me, ick. I
want something like Serena, Selene, Celeste, Aurora,
etc.
> 4. Name a person’s whose life you admire, someone
> historical or famous. So if you peak our interest
> we
> are able to learn more.
Probably Queen Elizabeth the I. One of Britain’s
greatest monarchs, in my opinion.
> 5.Name your favorite god, goddess, or myth. I’m not
> talking current religion ie Christianity, Islam,
> Jewish, Buddhist etc. But something from past
> cultures.
Probably the combination of Selene, Artemis, Luna, and
Diana, the goddesses of the moon, are my favorite
lengends. I adore the moon and everything attached to
it, so thus…
> 6. Name your favorite color(s). What do you think
> of, or what feelings do these colors evoke?
As a little girl, my favorite color was purple. I
really like purple a lot, I always will, but I really
like black (not really a color, but still), and a
dark, blood-red. White and silver will always have a
soft spot in me, too. I hate pastels except for
mint-green, and just about every color except for
neons (well, I like neon pink in small doses) I like
and wear.
> 7. Write you favorite recipe here. If you are not
> a
> cook, tell us about your favorite restaurant.
Okay, everyone, listen up. Because this is a once in
a lifetime opportunity! You are about to witness my
fried bananas recipe!
1/2 banana, sliced 1/4″ thick
1/3 Cup lemon juice
1 TBSP maple syrup
2 tsp nutmeg
3 tsp cinnamon
cooking butter
Take a small skillet, and put it on the appropiate
burner. Turn it onto “medium”, and take a knife’s
slice of butter, and put it in the pan. After the
butter has melted, swirl the pan around so the the
melted butter covers all of the surface area. Pour
the lemon juice and the maple syrup into the pan, and
put the bananas in. Let the bananas sit for a minute
an a half, and then pour the nutmeg and cinnamon on.
The bananas will be done when they give off a pungent
(but good) odor, and when they are slightly darker in
color, and quite sticky. Almost brown, but not burnt.
This can take anywhere from 2- 10 minutes. Then,
serve and enjoy!
Well, I read through this and I realized that I have
managed to make no bad jokes or mentions! So, Dawn,
maybe you won’t have to mallet me after all! Yay!
Amy
